It is
highly recommended to split your journey in 2 days. Getting through
the border at Komatipoort can take a while and the stretch through
Maputo itself also takes time. The road from Xai-Xai is very bad (potholes the size of your car) although this
bad patch is only 100 km long, you need to provide enough time (at
least 2 and a half hours) – DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS IN THE DARK! There
is another 230 km drive after finishing off the POTHOLE stretch!
HANDY travelling TIPS:
ROAD BLOCKS: To spare yourself a lot of money, please obey the traffic
rules in Moz!
1. Have your
vehicle papers handy 2. Wear you seat belts
(front and back passengers) 3. Stick to the speed limits
4. Greet the Officers friendly, stay calm, be patient!
A
very friendly half way stop is @ BLUE ANCHOR INN 50 km North of
Maputo. Please book in time: blueanchorinn@teledata.mz or
www.blueanchorinn.com – phone
Liz or Nigel on area code:
(+258) 823 253 050 – its only a few hundred meters off the main
road.
TRAVELLING FROM GAUTENG(South-Africa) – you need to use the Komatipoort Border
Post
TRAVELLING FROM KZN(South-Africa) – you need to use the Golela Border Post
travelling through Swaziland (much easier and much faster than
Komatipoort.
For
anyone travelling to Moz' with a Garmin Quest GPS system, you can download the Mozambique Maps off the
www.tracks4africa.co.za website
These
maps are compatible for use in Garmin together with the Mapsource
program that you use to setup the Garmin and is very cheap. The
Garmin will not route verbally but the driver can pre-install the
waypoints so that you will at least know that you’re on the right
road or where you should look out for a turnoff. These all come in
quite useful since the Garmin GPS Mapit Software does not yet have
adequate maps for Mozambique therefore auto routing cannot be used.
